Monthly Lecture - 29th June 2024; 4:00 PM.

⁍ Title - "Dykes: outcrop attributes and magma overpressure"

⁍ About the Speaker - Mr. Sirshendu Kumar Biswas is a Senior Research Fellow at the Geological Studies Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata.

Mr. Sirshendu Kumar Biswas is a Senior Research Fellow at the Geological Studies Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata. His doctoral research focuses on the evolution and interaction of brittle deformation features within the rocks of the Chitradurga Schist Belt, Western Dharwar Craton, India. He has worked on the emplacement mechanisms of dykes and estimation of magma overpressure from their partial exposures. His work also encompasses characterization of fracture networks developed within the crystalline rocks of the schist belt and understanding the mechanisms of their formation.
Sirshendu graduated with Honours in Geology from Durgapur Government College, The University of Burdwan in 2015 and acquired his master’s degree in Applied Geology from Presidency University, Kolkata in 2017.
After graduating, he worked briefly as an exploration geologist gaining experience in mineral commodities like coal and rock phosphate. Thereafter, he joined CSIR - National Geophysical Research Institute as a project assistant (level-II) and then, the Geological Studies Unit of Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata, as a project personnel, before formally joining the same institute as a Junior Research Fellow in 2021.

⁍ About RDS -
Rock Deformation and Structures (RDS) is a national conference under the aegis of Structural Geology and Tectonic Studies Group India (SGTSGI) which is affiliated to the IUGS (International Union of Geological Sciences) Commission on Tectonics and Structural Geology (TecTask).
The first RDS conference was conducted at Jadavpur University in October 2010. Later RDS II, III, IV, V, VI, and VII were organized in Lucknow, Dibrugarh, Haldwani, Delhi, Kerala & Banaras Hindu Universities in 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018,2021, and 2022 respectively.

The 8th RDS conference is scheduled to be organized at the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Bhopal (IISER, Bhopal)
