The process of naming the M1 Abrams tank began in 1972, when the US Department of Defense decided that the then M60 Patton tank was too outdated. They decided to develop a new tank that was stronger, faster and more reliable. This tank was finally named M1 Abrams, taken from the name of General Creighton Abrams who was famous as the United States military leader during the Vietnam War.
