STORYLINE:

One year after a powerful earthquake struck Bam, many of the historic city''s residents are still living in temporary accommodation.

The quake, which measured 6.5 on the Richter scale, struck Bam on December 26, 2003, reducing much of the city to rubble.

The death toll reached 26 thousand.

On the eve of the first anniversary of the disaster, bereaved relatives and friends went to Bam''s cemeteries to mourn their lost loved ones.

The tragedy brought about a swift international response, with nations from around the world contributing to the response and recovery effort.

Relief workers from Iran and more than 60 other countries tried to help tens of thousands of survivors who were homeless and without basic necessities.

The quake left few stable structures in the city and many of the survivors were forced to live in tents.

The Iranian government, with the help of some NGOs (non-governmental organisations), provided some survivors with makeshift cabins to protect them from the winter.
