This pageantry of the Investiture dates back to the Crusaders.
Her Majesty the Queen, Sovereign Head of the Most Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem, gives royal sanction for admission and promotion of individuals in the Order. Her Majesty is represented in Ontario by Her Honour, The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, OC, DStJ, OOnt, Lieutenant and Vice-prior.
The Lieutenant Governor and members of the procession are members of the Order of St. John in Canada. Their flowing black robes are emblazoned with the eight pointed white cross of St. John.
Banner Bearers lead the procession into the Legislative Building with the Banner of the Priory of Canada and the Banner of the St. John Council for Ontario. Red and white are the principal colours of the Banner of the Priory of Canada which carries a representation of the Royal Crest in the first quarter. Green and gold are the principal colours of the Banner of the St. John Council for Ontario and with the gold Trillium flower symbolize the Ontario Jurisdiction of the Order of St. John. The Order is represented on the Ontario Banner by the Arms of the Priory of Canada in the first quarter.
The Sword Bearer carries a magnificent reproduction of a Crusader’s sword fashioned in Britain by the craftsmen of Wilkinson Sword. The hilt of the sword is a wooden grip with brass cross guard and carries a brass kite-shaped pommel. The blade is superb quality plated with silver. The scabbard of black morocco leather has a brass metal mount inscribed with the words “St. John Ontario Council”. The scabbard bears the eight pointed cross of the Order in white enamel.
Thus this great Order of chivalry and caring maintains its traditions. By looking back to the spirit of self-sacrifice and devotion to the needs of others, which inspired the Knights Hospitaller of nearly one-thousand years ago, today’s members derive inspiration for their humanitarian works.
