A basic introduction to X-ray based spectroscopies will be given. This will include both X-ray absorption (XAS) and X-ray emission spectroscopies (XES). The element specificity of these methods and the ability to study samples in almost anyform, renders these methods very useful for studying countless questions ininorganic chemistry. This talk will cover the information content of each method, the experimental approach, and the analysis from both a qualitative and quantitative perspective. In the area of XAS, both the X-ray absorption near edge (XANES) region and extended x-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) region will be discussed. The XANES region primarily provides oxidation state and geometric information around a given photoabsorber. EXAFS data provide information about the distance and identity of scatters from a give photoabsorber, within Z +/- 1 atomic numbers. XES is complementary to XAS, and can provide more direct information about ligand ionization potentials and protonation states. Recent applications in inorganic chemistry will be highlighted.
