Belgium's struggle for sovereignty.

Amidst this historical square, the national cemetery was conceived in 1831 by Brussels' Provisional Government to honor the fallen heroes of the Belgian Revolution. In 1838, sculptor Willem Geefs, court sculptor to King Leopold I, was commissioned to create a poignant white marble monument encapsulating Belgium's sorrow.

At its zenith, a depiction of Freedom inscribes the September Days into history, while at her feet, the Belgian lion rests upon shattered chains, symbolizing liberation from oppression. Encircling the pedestal, four grieving angels embodying Battle, Victory, Martyrdom, and Hope offer silent homage.

Further down, four bas-reliefs narrate scenes from the September Days, showcasing the patriots' oath, Juan Van Halen's Warande Park assault, the counts' blessing by Saint Gudula's dean, and the heroes' coronation by Belgium.

The crypt, within a square, covered gallery, houses 27 black marble plaques engraved with the names of the 467 fallen heroes, serving as a solemn tribute to those who sacrificed their lives in the pursuit of Belgian independence.

Martelaarsplein boasts classicist buildings that currently house various Flemish ministries, enveloping the monument with administrative significance.
