🔷Mataró🔷
Mataró is a municipality and city in Spain, located in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula, on the coast of the province of Barcelona, next to the Mediterranean Sea. It is the capital of the Maresme. It is located about 33 km north of the city of Barcelona.
Mataró has 129 661 inhabitants, according to the revision of the register as of January 1, 2020. According to these data from the INE, Mataró is the 52nd most populated city in Spain and the 8th in Catalonia.
The city of Mataró has its origin in Roman times, as evidenced by the Roman villa of Can Llauder from the end of the 1st century BC, which was on the outskirts of the walls of the ancient Roman city of Iluro, the Roman name for Mataró. The remains of Iluro have recently been found in all the streets of the old nucleus, leaving the foundations of houses and even sewage areas visible in some central square.
The continuous aspiration to get rid of the feudal jurisdiction, in the 16th century, created a permanent defense of the town for the safety of its inhabitants. In 1480, King Ferdinand the Catholic granted the privilege of finally joining the Crown, which also represented the definitive formation of the municipality of Mataró. During the 16th century the wall was completed.
In the 16th century, Mataró was a small medieval town built around the church of Santa María and the Plaça Gran (Plaza Mayor). Its significant and progressive economic and demographic growth made the construction of a second wall necessary and at the same time possible and the incorporation of new urban spaces.
The walls of Mataró, built between 1569 and 1600, were the project of the royal engineer Jorge de Setara. Sections of the wall can now be seen on Calle Muralla dels Genovesos (recently restored), Calle Muralla D'en Titus, Calle Muralla de la Pressó and above Camí Ral.
The town's walling project lasted more than thirty years due to economic scarcity and disputes over its layout. At the time of raising the walls, part of the city that would correspond to the Camino Real (Camí Ral), was excluded from the perimeter, with the consequent complaints from neighbors and owners. The wall, made of stones of not very large measures and glued with mortar of two parts of sand and one part of lime, was not excessively solid, a fact that was demonstrated when some of the neighbors demolished part with relative ease.
The wall had seven portals and entrances, the most prominent being that of Barcelona (current Riera with Plaza Santa Anna), from which the coats of arms of the Principality, Mataró and Barcelona are reproduced. The original shields currently appear on the "cell" dedicated to Saint Sebastian. From the portal of Valldeix you can still see the silhouette of the facade of the house on the corner of the streets of La Coma and Sant Francesc d'Assís. The other portals were those of Argentona, Cabrera de Mar, San José, Feliu, the Pou de la Sinia and the Penya d'en Roig or Portalet.
At the beginning of the 18th century, the fishing ground on the western coast of Huelva began to be exploited from this town, culminating in the founding of La Higuerita (now Isla Cristina) by mainly people from Mataró and other Catalans.
