The number of babies born in Japan fell for an eighth straight year to a record low in 2023. The number of marriages also slid to around 490,000 -- the first time it has fallen below the 500,000 mark in nearly 100 years. A weakening currency, the high cost of living and unfavourable working conditions are some of the many issues that are keeping residents from having children. According to estimates, Japan's population will likely decline by about 30% to 87 million by 2070 if the trend is not reversed in the next decade or so.
