This short video tutorial walks you through the process of drawing a field sketch of a landscape when topographic relief is important. The geology discussed in this exercise is fictitious and meant only for illustrative purposes. Generally, it is best to simplify our sketches by removing surface topography to help us focus on geologic relationships. However, sometimes the topography is an integral part of the story we are trying to communicate. This tutorial shows how to capture these relationships using an earthflow in a valley between a ridge line in the distance and low-lying hills in the foreground within the context of Kurt’s five essentials of a good field sketch:
