Mariner 4 was a landmark space mission in the history of space exploration, conducted by NASA. Launched on November 28, 1964, Mariner 4 was the fourth spacecraft in the Mariner series and the first to successfully fly by Mars, marking humanity’s first close-up look at another planet.

Objective: Mariner 4's primary mission was to conduct a flyby of Mars to take the first close-up photographs of the Martian surface and gather scientific data about Mars' atmosphere and environment.
Design and Instruments: The spacecraft weighed about 260 kg (573 lb) and was equipped with scientific instruments, including a television camera for imaging, a cosmic dust detector, a solar plasma probe, a cosmic ray telescope, and a trapped radiation detector.
Mission Achievements:
On July 14, 1965, Mariner 4 passed within 9,846 kilometers (6,118 miles) of Mars, capturing 21 images of the planet’s surface.
These images revealed a cratered landscape, which challenged existing theories about Mars having canals or more Earth-like features.
The mission also detected a thin, cold atmosphere primarily composed of carbon dioxide and found no evidence of a substantial magnetic field.
The success of Mariner 4 was a major milestone in the exploration of Mars, providing the first close-up images of the planet and greatly influencing our understanding of Mars. The mission’s data paved the way for future Mars missions.
