As a Ridgecrest resident, Hamil Ma’s art explored the natural beauty that surrounded Ridgecrest. Eventually his repertoire expanded to include much of America’s southwest. While in Ridgecrest, Hamil was primarily a landscape watercolorist.
In 1995 Hamil and his family moved from Ridgecrest to Ann Arbor, Michigan. In Michigan, Hamil’s artistic interest expanded to include people and their urban lives. Hamil’s interest with street musicians, friends, stores, places of worship, and cityscapes made it necessary for him to become proficient with drawing mediums of pencil, charcoal, pen and ink. In Michigan, Hamil taught at Washtanaw Community College, University of Michigan extension, and the Ann Arbor Art Center.
In 2007, Hamil and wife Charlotte, moved to Alexandria, VA next to Washington DC. As with each move, Hamil’s repertoire of subject and media expanded to include landscapes and urban life on the East coast. Hamil taught at VisArts in Rockville, Maryland and at Prince George’s Community College, Largo Maryland.
While living in the east, Hamil also made regular painting trips to the southwest and traveled to Qinghai, China in 2013. In 2015, Hamil and wife Charlotte moved to Vallejo, California. In Vallejo, Hamil has been painting Napa and Sonoma valleys, Lake Tahoe, and the coastal areas around the bay area. Hamil is represented by Salon D’Art in Berkeley, CA.
Hamil is a prolific draftsman. His drawings of happenstance can be of some item, people, or a scene. His sketchbook is a visual recording of his life, the life he sees around him, and sometimes his feelings. On display in the show are drawings from his sketchbook, landscape scenes from the East coast, the southwest, Qinghai, California, items of happenstance, and musicians. Watercolor, pastel, pencil, and ink are the media represented in “A Little Of Many Things”.
