Working Out While Sick: Should You Train Or Rest?
http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/train...

I figured this was a good time of year to make a video on this subject...

What are the facts about working out when sick? Is going to the gym when sick okay, or should you stay home and rest?

Although I know that people prefer black and white answers to these sorts of things, this is definitely a very "gray area" subject.

When deciding whether working out while sick is appropriate for you or not, it highly depends on what type of sickness you're referring to (I.E. cold, flu, fever etc.) and what sort of training session you're dealing with (I.E a high intensity leg workout versus a moderate intensity arm workout).

Working out when sick largely just comes down to listening to your body and making the decision based on your particular situation.

For example, if it's just a common cold with typical cold symptoms but overall you feel like you'd be able to train without issues, it's likely okay to go ahead with it. Working out with a cold is something I've done many times before as long as it's just minor things like a cough or light headache.

On the other hand, if you're experiencing more "total body symptoms" (aches, fever, chills etc.) then I'd suggest skipping the gym. Working out with the flu or anything close to it is definitely not something I'd recommend as your body is already under stress and is fighting to recover.

If you're somewhere in the middle and are unsure, then you can simply begin your workout and take it step by step to see how you feel and assess from there.

Also keep in mind that if you do need to take time off, 1 or 2 weeks away from the gym is really no big deal in the larger picture. Just try to keep your nutrition on point as best you can and realize that you probably won't lose any real muscle during that time anyway.

So at the end of the day, the topic of working out when sick is highly variable and is mostly a matter of listening to your body. I think if you're honest with yourself then you can probably already feel whether you should really be in the gym or not.
