STORYLINE:
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov on Tuesday blamed Ukraine for destroying the Nova Kakhovka dam in a part of southern Ukraine that Moscow controls.

“It was a deliberate act of sabotage by the Ukrainian side,” Peskov said in a conference call with reporters.

He added that it “was clearly aimed at cutting water supplies to Crimea,” noting that the drop in water levels in the reservoir has reduced water flow to the channel which supplies Crimea with fresh water.

Peskov claimed that by the destruction of the dam, Ukrainian authorities may have sought to distract public attention from “the fact that a large-scale offensive action launched by the Ukrainian military two days ago has failed to achieve its goals."

Asked to comment on Ukraine accusing Russian forces of blowing up the dam, he said that Moscow "resolutely rejects" the claim.

He said the regional authorities will decide whether it would be necessary to evacuate residents from the affected areas.
