Since September, the US has been expanding its military operations in the Caribbean in an attempt to fight what it calls ‘narco-terrorism’. Under Operation Spear, Washington has launched deadly strikes on alleged Venezuelan drug boats, accusing the country’s leader Nicolas Maduro of running a drug-trafficking network. Yet, many believe Washington is using the ‘war on drugs’ pretext to carry out a regime change and overthrow the leader it has long despised. In the latest escalation of tensions, the US President declared that Venezuelan airspace should be considered closed, which many see as a prelude to an attack on Caracas. So, where is this escalation heading? And is this really about combatting the drug trade, or is it regime change by another name?
