Modi is calling Putin amid 50% tariff attack by the US: NATO chief Mark Rutte

In an interview on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte claimed that Russian President Vladimir Putin must be under pressure from Indian PM Narendra Modi, given US President Donald Trump's punitive tariffs on India for the purchase of Russian oil.

Rutte made the point after the interviewer pointed out that Trump has not imposed any direct sanctions or tariffs on Russia and all measures, such as tariffs on India, are secondary actions.

"This immediately impacts Russia because that means that Delhi is now on the phone with Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin in Moscow and Narendra Modi is asking, ‘Hey, I support you. But again, could you explain to me the strategy? Because I have now been hit by these 50 per cent tariffs by the United States.’ So President Trump is implementing what he says,” said Rutte.

The NATO chief also expressed disappointment that, so far, the West has collectively been unable to bring an end to the Ukraine conflict. However, he added, that Trump was working towards this goal via the secondary sanctions and other measures.
