The Sichuan earthquake occurred on Monday 12 May 2008 at 14:28:04 Beijing time. According to data from the China Earthquake Administration, the surface wave magnitude of this earthquake was 8.2 and the moment magnitude was 8.3. The epicenter was located 80 km northwest of the capital city of Chengdu in Sichuan Province and had a depth of 19 km. The shaking lasted just over 2 minutes. The earthquake ruptured a fault over 240 km (150 mi) long, displacement of the surface of several meters. The earthquake was also felt as far as Beijing and Shanghai—1,500 and 1,700 km respectively where office buildings swayed due to the earthquake, as well as Bangkok, Thailand and Hanoi, Vietnam. Strong aftershocks, some exceeding 6 Ms, continued to hit the area months after the main shock, causing further casualties and damage. The earthquake also caused the largest number of geohazards ever recorded, including approximately 200,000 landslides and more than 800 earthquake lakes spread over an area of ​​110,000 km2.
