Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus) Bird Call Video - Crowned Plover

This Crowned Lapwing (Vanellus coronatus) appeared to be on its lonesome, and was seen in the open grasslands of the S90 dirt road, in between Olifants and Satara on an overcast morning. This video shows the normal behaviour of the Crowned Lapwing, which was formerly known as the Crowned Plover. It was one of the first ground nesting birds I discovered as a youngster. In the background of this video you can hear the well known and typical bird call of the Crowned Lapwing.

In the vast wilderness of Kruger National Park, the Crowned Lapwing reigns supreme as a charismatic and distinctive avian resident. With its striking appearance, this medium-sized bird stands out with a regal crown of feathers atop its head, resembling a majestic headdress fit for avian royalty. It's black and white plumage creates a bold contrast, making it easily recognisable against the backdrop of the South African grasslands. As a ground-nesting bird, the Crowned Lapwing is fiercely protective of its territory, often performing a spectacular display of distraction tactics when potential threats approach its nest. Visitors to Kruger National Park are treated to the acrobatic aerobatics of these lapwings as they engage in stunning mid-air displays, their distinctive calls echoing through the savannah.

Beyond its captivating appearance and aerial prowess, the Crowned Lapwing plays a crucial role in the park's ecosystem.
