Here’s how I connect two framed walls at a corner.
In the last video, I built a wall in place - I’m gonna build this small sample wall on the ground.
I make sure to crown all the studs up.
Sometimes you get a stud that’s twisted, so I make a tool to twist them in place.
To square the wall, I pull a tape measure from corner to corner on both sides.
I adjust the wall until the numbers match- then I know I’m square.
I like to use ring shank galvanized nails on sheathing.
We let the OSB extend past the wall 5 ½’ -this will help to tie together the corner.
After I drill a hole for the anchor bolt, I staple the sill seal directly to the bottom plate.
Next, I install a California corner into the wall that’s already standing.
This corner gives me a place to nail the two walls together, and there’s room behind to fit insulation.
Now I stand up the new wall, line up the anchor bolt, and drop it in place.
First, I nail off the California corner before moving to the outside to nail off the OSB; then I use my impact to tighten the nut on the anchor bolt.
Here you can see where the two walls connect: I held the double plate back on the first wall- this way the double plate on the new wall will overlap and tie the two together.
Overlapping the double plate at corners and intersecting walls adds a ton of strength.
