An iconic Classic: Brigadier Gerard beats Mill Reef in the epic 1971 renewal of the 2000 Guineas

A race that is often regarded as being one of the absolute greats, with Mill Reef sent off favourite ahead of My Swallow and Brigadier Gerard, all three having shown outstanding form as two-year-olds in the previous season.

The field of six was the first single-figure line-up for a 2000 Guineas in the 20th century, most having been scared off by the brilliant performers at the head of the betting.

My Swallow set off at a tremendous gallop here, but had no answer to the Brigadier close home, who shot clear to score by three lengths under Joe Mercer.
