A grieving mother is demanding justice after her daughter, Danielle Stilwell, was struck and killed in a hit-and-run crash on West Highland Street near Wabash Avenue in Lakeland around 4 a.m. Surveillance footage helped deputies track the suspect, 24-year-old Aaliyah Cruz, who allegedly left the scene to avoid being late for work at a Publix warehouse.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd says Cruz later told her supervisor she thought she might have hit someone — and even took photos of the damage to her car. Sheriff Judd emphasized that had Cruz stopped at the scene, she likely would not be facing criminal charges. She is now out on $50,000 bond, charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a first-degree felony.

Danielle’s mother placed flowers at the crash site as a plea for drivers to slow down and take responsibility.
