In the late 1800s Melbourne opened two orbital rail lines - the inner circle railway and the outer circle railway. Unlike most of Melbourne's train lines, these didn't run from the city out into the suburbs, and instead took an orbital style route that crossed over many of the city's existing train lines.

If these lines existed today, they would provide heaps of new interchange opportunities - including between the Upfield, Mernda, Hurstbrigde, Belgrave, Lilydale, Glen Waverley, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines - not to mention all the tram lines it would cross as well.

But sadly, the lines closed pretty shortly after opening. So, in this video I'm going to be looking at why these lines were built, why closed and if there might be any value in bringing them back.
