The 2019 Triumph Speed Twin is the latest addition the British marque's successful 'Modern Classic' line up, which makes some large claims to potential riders. Touting a promise of combining the utility and user-friendly experience of the Bonneville T120 with the race-inspired sportiness of the Thruxton is no small task, but that’s precisely what the engineers at the Hinckley factory have delivered.

Powered by the brilliant 1200cc ‘High-Power’ parallel-twin engine, the Speed Twin claims to make 96 horsepower and 83 ft/lbs. of torque – a perfect amount of performance for the street and something that translates to loads of fun in the canyons or cities.

Interestingly, the 2019 Speed Twin is equipped with nearly the same spec engine as what is found in the Scrambler 1200. To that end, it’s received nearly all the same updates, which include: a magnesium cam cover, lightened engine covers, and a revised clutch assembly – all of which save roughly 5.5 pounds, when compared to the 1200cc motor found in the current Thruxton.

Saving a bit of weight wasn’t the only change to the engine. Internally, a lightweight crankshaft, mass-optimized counter-balancer shafts, and the revised clutch assembly imbue the stately 1200cc with a new-found sense of liberation by freeing up the engine – giving it loads of grunt and character at any point in the rpm range.

Falling in line with all the Modern Classic machines, the Speed Twin features adjustable traction control and non-adjustable ABS. Also, three riding modes which alter the throttle response and electronic aid intervention can be found as well. The three modes in question are Rain, Road, and Sport.

Set with its revised motor, the Speed Twin fills a performance gap between the T120 and Thruxton, resulting in a Goldilocks moment for motorcyclists. With riser handlebars and sporty rearsets, the Speed Twin is suitable in nearly any environment but comes into its own when the rider can reap the benefits of the athletic stance that the foot controls encourage.

Equipped with a modest, non-adjustable KYB fork and spring pre-load adjustable KYB dual shocks, the Speed Twin can soak up everything that the average rider will face when out on the road. It holds its line remarkably well, while also delivering compliant, comfortable suspension when around town. Save for a bit of harshness that’s translated on extremely rough roads – riders should be more than happy with the Speed Twin’s suspenders.

Overall, the Speed Twin is able to remain clam and collected in the city limits and luckily, all of those positive qualities remain once you've opened it up in the canyons. Once again, Triumph was able to shave off roughly 22 pounds in comparison to the Thruxton and nearly 60 pounds when stacked up against the T120 - which we can partially thank for its great handling prowess.

Senior Editor Nic de Sena packed his bags and headed off to the quaint island of Mallorca, off the coast of Spain to see if Triumph had delivered on their promise.
