Is rock music officially dead? We’ve been asking this question for decades, but a recent Billboard 200 moment might have given us the clearest — and most depressing — answer yet.
Last week, My Chemical Romance’s Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge — a deluxe reissue of a 21-year-old album — outsold Turnstile’s brand new 2025 release Never Enough. That’s not a great sign. When legacy albums outperform modern ones in a genre, it doesn’t just raise eyebrows — it raises alarms.
Back in the 80s, this wouldn’t have happened. Journey wasn’t outselling Fall Out Boy. Def Leppard wasn’t dominating New Found Glory. Yet here we are, in 2025, watching the biggest moments in rock go to the past instead of the present.
In this video:
Why Three Cheers outselling Never Enough is a warning sign
What this says about the current state of rock music
How nostalgia is dominating new releases
Whether rock can evolve — or if it’s already over
My personal perspective as a former rock host for Amazon Music and KROQ
Let’s have the conversation that no one in the industry wants to admit.
