In April 2019, a solar-powered canoe was launched in the Ecuadorean Amazon. The canoe connects nine indigenous communities, and is an alternative to one of the only other means of traveling from one village to the next: by plane. The communities are opposed to constructing connecting roads in the region, which is one of the most biodiverse parts of the world. Community members say they conceived this solar boat in a dream, during a special ceremony.
