I discovered that there is actually a timpani drum sample in The Legend of Zelda - A Link to the Past. It is almost impossible to hear and most people assume it is a woodblock or snare 2 instrument. Koji Kondo apparently created it by hand as he did with the original Super Mario world and Pilotwings instruments. It also plays during the Gannon interlude. It is still difficult to discern and is not immediately obvious to pinpoint as an identifiable source. More covering original SNES instruments later.
