Promoting Prison Contraband in Alabama

Promoting prison contraband occurs if someone introduces or obtains a prohibited object in a prison or jail or any detention facility.

It can be a weapon, escape tool, illegal drug … anything prohibited for an inmate to have in a detention facility.
This crime has three levels.

If a person introduces (or an inmate obtains) a deadly weapon or an escape tool, it’s promoting prison contraband, first degree; punishment is from a year and a day to 10 years in prison.

A person who introduces (or an inmate who obtains illegal drugs) can be charged with prison contraband, second degree; punishment for this crime ranges from the year date of 10 years in prison.

Introducing or providing an inmate with any contraband or anything that is unlawful for an inmate to possess (or an inmate who obtains such things) is promoting prison contraband in the third degree. It could be something as simple as giving an inmate a cigarette.
This is a misdemeanor with punishment of up to six months six months in jail and a $3000 fine.
