What are the sources of skepticism about climate change and/or mistrust of climate science? What processes, mechanisms and dynamics are implicated in provoking and prolonging the debate about climate change? To what extent are these specific to the climate debate, and to what extent they are representative of a broader mistrust in experts? What can be done to increase trust in climate science or consensus around appropriate measures or interventions? We will explore these questions and more with an esteemed panel of social scientists including Paul Edwards, Myanna Lahsen and Peter Weingart. Moderated by Gil Eyal.

Speaker bios

Dr. Paul N. Edwards is William J. Perry Fellow in International Security and Senior Research Scholar at CISAC, as well as Professor of Information and History at the University of Michigan. At Stanford, his teaching includes courses in the Ford Dorsey Program in International Policy Studies and the Program in Science, Technology & Society. His research focuses on the history, politics, and culture of knowledge and information infrastructures. He focuses especially on environmental security (e.g. climate change, Anthropocene risks, and nuclear winter).

Dr. Myanna Lahsen is a Senior Associate (“Titular”) Researcher in the Earth System Science Center of the Brazilian Institute for Space Research (INPE) in Brazil. She has held research positions, lectureships and professorships at Harvard University, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the University of Colorado in the United States, and at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. She is adviser to Nature Climate Change and Environmental Research Letters, executive editor of Environment: Science and Policy for Sustainable Development, and founding, former executive editor of the Social Status of Climate Change Knowledge subdomain of WIREs: Climate Change.

Professor Dr. Peter Weingart is the former NRF Chair in Science Communication at Stellenbosch University. He is Professor Emeritus of sociology and science policy at the University of Bielefeld (Germany) and former director of the Institute for Science and Technology Studies (IWT 1993–2009) as well as of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF) 1989–1994 at that university. He was a fellow of the Wissenschaftskolleg Berlin (1983/84), and visiting fellow at Harvard University (1984/85) as well as the Getty Research Institute (2000). His current research interests are science advice to politics, science–media interrelation, and science communication.

Moderator bio

Gil Eyal is Professor of Sociology at Columbia University, where he is also the co-Director of the Precision Medicine & Society program, and he leads a Mellon Sawyer seminar on "Trust and mistrust of Experts and Science." His most recent book is The Crisis of Expertise, published by Polity Press in 2019. Previously, he co-wrote The Autism Matrix, published by Polity Press in 2010.
