Описание к видео The new guy in town: mate preference and male polymorphism in the Trinidadian guppy

The diversity of the life on this planet is breathtaking. Understanding how genetic diversity persists, especially in traits under strong natural selection, has been a long-standing question in evolutionary biology. One process that can maintain variation is negative frequency dependent selection, which is a type of selection where there is a fitness advantage for rare genotypes. The Trinidadian guppy is a model system where both negative frequency dependent natural and sexual selection appear to be at play to explain the extreme diversity of male guppy color patterns. My hypothesis is that female preference for rare male color patterns is driving the extreme male polymorphism in this species.

Dr. Jennifer Valvo grew up on a grape farm in Fredonia, NY, a small town south of Buffalo. She double majored in Music and Biology at SUNY Fredonia and earned a master’s degree in Secondary Education (Certifications in Biology, Chemistry, and Music) from Niagara University. She worked in the zoological field for 15 years as a marine mammal trainer. Because of her interest in understanding animal behavior in an evolutionary genetics context, she decided to temporarily leave the zoological field to pursue a Ph.D. in Biological Science with a focus on Evolutionary Biology. Dr. Valvo will be returning to the zoological field to conduct research in animal welfare and conservation.

TIES NEW BOOK:
Written by members of the Teacher Institute for Evolutionary Science who have tackled the topic of evolution in their classroom for decades, "On Teaching Evolution" offers practical advice and sample lesson plans for fellow science teachers. Learn about what inspired them to love teaching evolution and the experiences that help guide their teaching practices.

“If you can read this, thank a teacher” So runs a favorite t-shirt slogan. This book inspires me to coin a variant: “If you understand why you exist and rejoice in that understanding, thank a science teacher.” More specifically, thank a teacher of evolution." - From foreward by Richard Dawkins
