Log trucks are 18 wheelers too and like many 18 wheelers and large trucks, they present hazards that you find with any type of large commercial truck going down the highway, but there’s a unique hazard to log trucks and that is the hazard of tail swing. That tail swing hazard occurs when long logs are placed on the end of a log truck and those logs extend beyond the rear axle of the log truck trailer. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. If you all imagine my fingers as being the rear axle of a log truck trailer, you can imagine what happens when the log truck makes a right or left turn. Those logs swing out well beyond the lane of traffic in which the log truck is positioned. That swinging motion is called tail swing. It’s a recognized hazard in the logging industry and as you can imagine if the log truck driver is not careful, that tail swing hazard presents a danger to not only oncoming traffic but traffic in the adjoining lane of the log truck that is in the process of passing the log truck when the log truck makes its right hand turn. I’m going to show you an example of a tail swing hazard, or an illustration of what’s recognized to be a tail swing hazard. What you see right now is an illustration of a tail swing hazard. The image of the school bus is not a dramatization. It actually occurred a few years ago and in that incident, three children were killed and 18 other school children were seriously injured. This is a well-known hazard in the industry that needs to be watched out for, not only by passing motorists but by people who enforce our logging truck regulations and laws.
