5th Grade Math 1.11, Evaluate Numerical Expressions, Order of Operations

A numerical expression is a mathematical phrase that has numbers and operation signs. It does not have an equal sign. To evaluate means to find the value of. We can evaluate a numerical expression that has more than one operation by following the rules of operations. These rules are called the order of operations. First, we do within parentheses, then any exponents, then we multiply or divide from left to right, then we add or subtract from left to right. The order of operations tells us the order in which we should evaluate an expression. More than one answer is possible if the operations are not performed in the correct order. We should pay attention to clue words in a word problem that can tell us which operation sign to use in our expression. We always perform the operations within parentheses first. We solve a word problem that involves parentheses and the order of operations. We rewrite an expression by inserting parentheses to equal a given value. We evaluate several numerical expressions using the order of operations. We show how we can solve an expression in two ways by using the order of operations, and then the Distributive Property, and getting the same answer.
