Mosque of Pasha Gazi Kasim, Pécs

Pécs became an eastern city as the result of the 143 year-long Turkish occupation that changed the looks of the city.

The invaders planned long-term occupation and so they changed the architectural environment. They built mosques for the progress of the soul and baths for the body, while the main street was transformed into a bazaar. The stones of the Gothic Church of Saint Bartholomew that previously stood on the main square were used in 1543 to construct this mosque at the order of Pasha Gazi Kasim. In size it is the greatest reminder of the Turkish Age in Hungary. From the notes of Cselebi Evlia, a famous traveller of the time, we know that its size and looks rivalled the mosque of Sultan Selim in Istambul. Pécs was liberated from Turkish occupation on 14th October, 1686 and the thanksgiving service was held here.

Since 1868 only Christian ceremonies have been held here and to satisfy this demand the interior was re-built: however, the outside looks the same as it did during the Turksih Age. It consists of typical Ottoman architectural elements: hive pattern ogee windows, stalactite pattern vault and a mihrab (prayer niche) facing Mecca. We can find poems from the Koran scattered on the walls while the containers of Holy Water next to the vestries were part of the bath of Pasha Gazi Kasim. Its minaret was hit by lightning in the eighteenth century and was later demolished by the Jesuits. The combination of Muslim crescent moon and Christian cross on its dome is unique. Today it operates as a Catholic church, its organ being made by the Angster Organworks and its wall paintings the work of local painter Ernő Gebauer.
