Sections 23 and 24 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 govern the effect of intoxication on criminal responsibility. Section 23 grants exemption where intoxication is involuntary and renders the person incapable of understanding the nature or wrongfulness of the act. Section 24 provides that voluntary intoxication does not absolve liability, and the person is presumed to have knowledge as if sober.
