📍The province of Davao del Norte was one (1) of the three (3) provinces created through the division of the Davao Province by virtue of Republic Act 4867 dated 8 May 1967. It celebrates its founding anniversary every 1st of July. Verulo C. Boiser was appointed as the first Governor of Davao del Norte from 1968 to 1971 and was elected Governor for two terms from 1971 to 1974 and from 1974 to 1977. He was succeeded by Gregorio R. Dujali, who served as Davao del Norte Governor from 1977 to 1986. Prospero S. Amatong succeeded Gov. Dujali and served as governor from 1986 to 1998. Rodolfo del Rosario was then elected as Governor of the province from 1998 to 2004 followed by Gelacio P. Gementiza from 2004 to 2007. Del Rosario was reelected as governor from 2007 until 2016. He was succeeded by his son, Antonio Rafael G. del Rosario who was elected as Governor from 2016 to 2019. Edwin I. Jubahib is the current Davao del Norte Governor until the end of his term in 2022.

The province generally has a low land terrain comprising 37 percent of the total land area with less than 100 meters elevation. The highest elevation ranging from 1000 to 2000 meters only comprising 3 percent of the total land area of the province and is found in the municipalities of Kapalong and Talaingod.

Water resources

Fifteen (15) rivers and creeks traverse the province. The bigger rivers such as the Lasang, Tagum/Libuganon, Saug and Tuganay drain the broad plain west and north into Davao Gulf. These major rivers are part of the watersheds of the same name. Tagum/Libuganon River with a total length of 95 kilometers is the longest among the major rivers in the province and has a total watershed area of 247,500 hectares.

Climate and rainfall

The province has Type IV climate under the coronas classification and is characterized by unpronounced dry and wet seasons. Rainfall is more or less evenly distributed throughout the year with no pronounced rainy season and dry season. Davao del Norte is no longer typhoon-free as the province has experienced the onslaught of typhoon Pablo in December 2012 which brought damages on infrastructure and agriculture. The fairly pronounced rainy months in the province are from November through February.

Mineral resources

Davao del Norte is endowed with rich deposits of non-metallic minerals like guano, marble, limestone and others. It has an estimated total reserve of 44,845,283 metric tonnes of non-metallic minerals. The province also has an abundant source of high grade quality sand and gravel, a major component material in construction, and is the second largest producer of sand and gravel in Davao Region.

Demographic Characteristics

Davao del Norte has a total population of 1,125,057 (2020 Census of Population and Housing), which is the largest among the provinces in Davao Region. Its population density of 329 persons per square kilometer is the highest among provinces in the region. The population growth rate (PGR) of 2.16 percent (2015-2020 intercensal years) is the fastest among five (5) provinces in the region.

Economic Structure

The economy of the province is primarily agricultural-based. Vast tracks of land are devoted to agricultural production of staple and industrial crops. About 63.41% of the total income generated by the province comes from agricultural production, while 22.98% is contributed by the industries sector followed by the 5.86% from the services sector.

Agriculture

In terms of contributions to the income of the province from the agriculture sector, Cavendish banana contributed the most among the major crops. This is followed by coconut production and rice.

Industry

The province of Davao del Norte is a major contributor to the Banana Industry in Davao Region. The current production output of the province both in local and export banana provides gainful economic opportunities in the entire Banana Value Chain.
