Charles Apgar was an amateur radio operator during WWI. Sitting at his home in Westfield, New Jersey, he was able to listen in and record messages coming from the Sayville Radio Station (WSL) in New York, which was owned by Telefunken, a German company. Although WSL claimed not to be in communication with the German empire, that was false. They were secretly sending messages about US ship movements, which in turn allowed the Germans to sink the RMS Lusitania, dragging the USA into the war.
Charles Apgar was the father of Virginia Apgar, the obstetric anesthesiologist who came up with the Apgar score.
