Patty Duke comes from a childhood so dark and frightening it could have been written by Charles Dickens. She became a household name for her roles in both the Broadway and film versions of The Miracle Worker. She followed that up with her own sitcom and then starred in the cult classic, Valley of the Dolls. Today, she's just as well known for doing her part to increase awareness about bipolar disorder, which she was diagnosed in 1982, which transformed her into an outspoken and dedicated activist for those dealing with mental health issues.
