Описание к видео Relationship Coach Reacts to It Ends with Us

Trigger warning: this video talks about domestic violence and sexual assault.

Short version? I didn't like it at all. This book has so many cringeworthy issues that I wouldn't recommend it to anybody at any point.

First and foremost, there are zero trigger warnings despite domestic violence and sexual assault being a core theme throughout the book. I can usually push through when reading about accounts of domestic violence and sexual assault, but I almost stopped reading this book twice because of some of the scenes the author describes.

Second, Colleen Hoover essentially romanticizes the abuse and encourages the idea of keeping an abusive partner in your life even after you end the relationship. I think she was trying to highlight the difficult juxtaposition many domestic violence victims face, where they want the abuse to stop but there is still part of them that feels love for their abuser. She just doesn't make that point nearly as well as she could. Domestic violence is messy and confusing, especially when children are involved and this book makes it seem like as soon as you end an abusive relationship, the abuse will stop. That's rarely how it goes.

The third issue I have is that the author makes it look like leaving an abusive partner is an easy process. She created Lily as a character who has a large support system and the financial resources to leave Ryle the second she makes the decision. This isn't always the case for people with few financial resources or for those who have been isolated from their friends and family by their abuser.
