Mahmood Khan Achakzai, the chief of Tehreek Tahaffuz-i-Ayeen-i-Pakistan (TTAP), has sparked a nationwide protest movement against the proposed 27th Constitutional Amendment. In a powerful statement, Achakzai likened the amendment to a '9/11 on Pakistan', arguing that it would shatter the very foundation of the country.
During a news conference at the National Press Club, Achakzai announced a series of slogans for the peaceful protest, including a quote from Habib Jalib's ghazal: 'Aise Dastoor Ko, Subh-i-BeNoor Ko, Me Nahi Manta, Mai Nahi Janta'. He also emphasized the need for democracy to prevail over dictatorship, and called for the release of prisoners.
Achakzai, a self-proclaimed 'true patriotic', has taken the oath to protect Pakistan five times, with the current National Assembly speaker, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, administering two of those oaths. He recalled a conversation with the former speaker, Gohar Ayub Khan, in 1993, where he suggested taking an additional oath to protect the Constitution from military intervention.
Drawing parallels with Afghanistan, Achakzai highlighted the shared language and blood between the two countries, stating that forgiveness can only come with the establishment of a constitution and democracy in Pakistan. He further criticized the country's economic state, with 45% of people living below the poverty line, while some seek lifetime impunity from the law.
Achakzai argued that the country's protection lies not in empowering a single individual but in strengthening its constitution and its people. He urged all sections of society to unite and resist the conspiracy to smash the Parliament, emphasizing the urgency of the situation and the need for a system to protect Pakistan before it's too late.
Another TTAP leader, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar, echoed Achakzai's sentiments, stating that the 27th Amendment is designed to protect the interests of certain individuals, disconnected from the issues facing the public. The TTAP has detailed plans for a National Conference this week to strategize against the amendment, with the day after its passing being observed as a 'Black Day'. The movement also includes publishing articles in newspapers and meeting with stakeholders, including bar councils and retired Supreme Court judges.
