CINCINNATI (WKRC) -- The Centers for Disease Control comes to town to take a hard look at an increase in fentanyl overdose deaths. Officials with the Ohio Department of Health said the CDC will stay in the state for at least three weeks. Statistics show fentanyl overdoses increased from nearly 80 in 2013 to more than 500 in 2014. They said the goal of bringing in scientists was to figure out how the drug was getting into the Tri-State and how to stop it. Dr. Mary DiOrio of the Ohio Dept. of Health said, There are a couple of data sources we are looking at. We are looking at the vital statistics records, coroner reports, and information from the prescription drug monitoring system. We are looking not only who died from fentanyl overdoses but also those who have had other overdoses to compare and understand the situation. Officials said Ohio was not the only state dealing with soaring rates of fentanyl overdoses but it is one of the first states to have the CDC visit.
