India is advancing a sovereign artificial intelligence push to build models tailored to its linguistic and administrative needs. Bengaluru-based Sarvam AI has launched two tools: Sarvam Vision, an optical character recognition system designed to read complex paper records and scanned documents, and Bulbul, a text-to-speech model supporting more than 35 voices across 11 Indian languages, with expansion planned. Sarvam says its OCR model scored 84.3% accuracy on one benchmark, outperforming Google’s Gemini on that specific test. The initiative is part of a wider national strategy backed by government funding, with other Indian firms developing AI tools across sectors.
