The sonnet "When I Consider How My Light is Spent," also known as "On His Blindness," is one of John Milton's most famous works. Written by Milton (1608–1674), it was first included in his 1673 Poems, which appeared in his personal manuscript, known as the "Trinity Manuscript" due to its preservation in the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge. In this notebook, the sonnet was labeled as number 19, but in the published version, it was assigned the number 16. Both designations are still used. Though widely recognized by the title On His Blindness, Milton himself did not give it this name; it was added much later by editor Thomas Newton in his 1761 edition of Milton’s works, which was a common editorial practice for posthumous publications at the time.
