Bach wrote the chorale prelude Komm, Gott Schöpfer, Heiliger Geist – recorded here for All of Bach with Matthias Havinga – on the occasion of Whitsuntide. For this he arranged an ancient melody, the gregorian hymn Veni creator spiritus. Beneath the calm chorale melody the rhythm of a gigue – a fast Baroque dance – is heard, which supports the festive character of the Whitsun celebrations. The unusual syncopated bass ensures that this chorale prelude stands out immediately.
