How Taliban's Leader Khalil Haqqani Assassinate By ISIS ? Who Was Khalil Haqqani ?

On December 10, a senior member of the Afghan cabinet and a key Taliban leader, Khalilur Rehman Haqqani, was killed in a suicide attack in the capital Kabul. The local branch of the global extremist organization, the so-called Islamic State (ISIS), ISIS-K, claimed responsibility for the attack. Khalil Haqqani was the uncle of Sirajuddin Haqqani, the deputy leader of the Afghan Taliban and current Interior Minister. He was the head of the Haqqani family and a key leader for whom the US government had announced a reward of US$5 million for help in his capture. Khalil Haqqani is the most senior Taliban leader to be killed in ISIS-K attacks in Afghanistan so far. 70-year-old Khalil Haqqani was from the Gardi Sari district of Paktia province, Afghanistan. Khalil Haqqani was the younger brother of Jalaluddin Haqqani, a key commander of the Afghan resistance against the Soviet forces. According to a 2013 study on Jalaluddin Haqqani by renowned American researchers Donald Rosslers and Waheed Brown, when Jalaluddin Haqqani and his family moved to North Waziristan, a tribal area in Pakistan bordering Paktia, due to an armed rebellion against former Afghan President Sardar Dawood Khan in 1975, Khalil Haqqani was under the care of his brother Jalaluddin Haqqani due to the death of his father at a young age, and he also moved to Waziristan with them. According to this study, with the emergence of the Taliban in the 1990s, Jalaluddin Haqqani, along with his family and all his associates, joined the Taliban movement and soon became one of its important members. The ISIS attack on Khalil Haqqani is being seen as a significant failure of Taliban security. Earlier, in a similarly planned attack, ISIS also targeted influential Taliban religious leader Maulvi Rahimullah Haqqani in the capital Kabul in August 2022.
