Great Sand Dunes National Park is home to the tallest sand dunes in North America. High Dune rises 699 feet (213 meters) above the valley floor and is the second highest dune in the park. Winds in the area can often reach 40 miles per hour (65 km/h), shaping the dunes and making the climb challenging at times. There is no maintained trail to the summit, and it is recommended to follow the ridge lines to make hiking on the sand a bit easier.
