The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has called on Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to remain steadfast in defending democratic values and contributing to national development.

Akpabio made the call during the first Civil Society Summit on Civil Democracy and National Development, held in Abuja.

Represented by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akpabio praised CSOs for their consistent advocacy in upholding the rule of law and order in the country.

Also speaking at the summit, former senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, encouraged CSOs to remain professional and principled in their operations within a democratic framework.


In his remarks, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Sunday Dare admonished civil society groups to move beyond agitation and focus on meaningful dialogue that can drive positive change.


A key highlight of the event was an award presentation ceremony. The conference, themed "Civil Society, Democracy and Governance Reform; Building Sustainable Partnership for National Development" focused on strengthening collaboration between civil society and government for long-term national progress.
