The South African National Roads Agency Limited's (Sanral) integrated annual report released last week reported a drop of almost one-third in revenue from e-tolls in Gauteng for the financial year that ended in March 2021.

The agency says refusal by road users to pay e-toll fees on the Gauteng Freeway Improvement Project (GFIP) continues to have a negative impact on Sanral's financials.

As of the 31st of March 2021, Sanral said its total liabilities grew by ten billion from R130 billion from the previous year to R140 billion.

Sanral manages over 20 thousand kilometres of South Africa roads network and its financial viability should be a concern to avoid another failed state entity.
