How do we manage relationships between the interests of a group of people, the interests of individual group members, and the interests of the broader systems in which individuals and groups are enmeshed? In this dialogue, volume editor Steven C. Hayes, evolution scientist David Sloan Wilson, and contextual behavioral scientist Paul W. B. Atkins discuss their project, Prosocial—an intervention that allows groups to resolve interpersonal differences and clarify the values they hold and the goals they are working toward. They explore Prosocial’s bases in principles of evolutionary theory like multilevel selection, the core design principles created by Elinor Ostrom to help groups most effectively manage resources they hold in common, and elements of contextual behavioral science like acceptance and commitment therapy. As the conversation makes clear, Prosocial points toward methods of social organization and government that break from laissez-faire or command-and-control models to consider how we can understand the needs and selection pressures that operate on individuals and groups on multiple levels simultaneously, and what a society shaped by such an understanding might look like.
