Footage covers a stretch of Provincial Highway No. 20 starting about 30 km down from Tianchi. The mountain road provides magnificent views into the valley of Laonong River and to adjacent mountain scenery.
The Southern Cross-Island Highway 南橫公路, also known as Provincial Highway No. 20, links Tainan City on the west coast to Taitung City on the east coast of Taiwan. The highest point of the road, Yakou, is 2,722 m above sea level. The route was cut through the mountains in the early 1970s, but the highest sections were not properly paved until 1992. The highway was badly damaged by Typhoon Morakot in 2009 and has been closed ever since. At time of filming, the road was open from west to Tianchi at an elevation of 2,280 m (on certain days and hours).
