Bankside Yards | London’s Hypermixed Cultural Neighbourhood

Bankside Yards, which sits along the South Bank of the Thames, is a new hypermixed cultural neighbourhood for London. The development creates an iconic new quarter that not only joins together some of London’s most important cultural institutions, but also acts as a new gateway for the borough of Southwark creating new walkable routes through a previously impermeable site.

The new district is the UK’s first fossil fuel-free major mixed-use development in operation. All its electrical power will come from fully renewable sources and it will feature a pioneering fifth-generation energy sharing network. This will deliver reductions in energy use and mean the site is net zero carbon in operation.

The 5.5-acre mixed-use scheme comprises eight new buildings with more than 350,000 sq ft of offices, 50,000 sq ft of amenities, bars, restaurants and cultural space. The development will also deliver more than 700 apartments. 55% of the site is dedicated to public realm, with eight spaces of distinct character. 14 Victorian railway arches will be restored and made publicly accessible for the first time in 150 years, creating new connectivity between Bankside and Southwark.
