When Al Jefferson was playing back in the day, he had some of the best footwork as a big in the league combined with a soft touch around the rim. He didn’t need a ton of moves to get to his spots on the court and score—he could manipulate the defender’s positioning with different shot fakes, jab steps, and his footwork, which made it easier to get angles to the basket.

Watch in this clip how he displayed elite footwork in the mid-post area by catching the ball in triple-threat position with his body slightly turned to the middle of the paint on the left side of the court. Once he faces up to the basket, he does a quick shot fake by raising the ball and his head toward the rim, which got the defender to leave his feet and try to contest. Now once the defender is in the air, he brings the ball quickly back to his body and does a smooth rip-through going toward the baseline away from his defender. The defender is lost and trying to recover to Jefferson, so Jefferson gets more space for his jumper by immediately sidestepping off the left foot as soon as he puts the ball on the floor. Now Jefferson has more than enough time and space to get off the leaning jumper going baseline.

Keep in mind this was done all in 1 dribble! Jefferson was such a crafty player, especially in the mid/post-up area! Bigs, take some notes!
