Nachiyar Koil Garuda Statue Mystery – An Unexplained Spiritual Phenomenon
Located near Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, Nachiyar Koil (Manimadak Temple) is one of the most mysterious Hindu temples in India. The temple is famous for its unique Stone Garuda (Garudar) statue, which is believed to change its weight during temple processions—a phenomenon that continues to puzzle devotees and researchers alike.
During the annual processions held twice a year, the Garuda statue is taken out from the sanctum. At the beginning, only four people are able to carry the statue. However, as the procession moves forward, the statue is said to gradually become heavier. Step by step, more people are required—eventually around 128 people are needed to lift the same statue when it reaches the temple streets through the Rajagopuram.
According to long-standing temple tradition, sweat-like droplets appear on Garuda’s forehead as the weight increases, which devotees believe is a sign of divine presence. After the procession ends and the statue returns to the sanctum, the weight is said to gradually decrease, and once again only four people are needed to carry it inside.
This extraordinary event has been reported for several centuries, yet no scientific explanation has been officially proven.
